Jan. 13, 2024
Deadline: 11.02.2024
The Käte Hamburger Kolleg „Einheit und Vielfalt im Recht“ (EViR, ‘Legal
Unity and Pluralism‘) at the University of Münster invites applications
for Short Term Fellowships (2 months) for the period from – preferably –
1 April 2025 to 31 May 2025. It may be possible to extend the
fellowships by up to ten months, provided that the Kolleg’s application
for a second period of funding is approved.

The Käte Hamburger Kolleg ”Legal Unity and Pluralism” examines phenomena of unresolved simultaneity of legal unity and pluralism from a genuinely historical perspective. Its main hypothesis is that legal pluralism should not be regarded as a sign of deficient law or a dysfunctional legal praxis (of earlier historical periods) but as a structural characteristic of law per se. The project opens up unusual perspectives on the understanding of law and society in general and the (legal) ways of dealing with forms of cultural diversity in particular. The goal of the Kolleg is to develop and to test a historically informed descriptive and analytical model in a cooperation between the fellows and the Münster scholars. In this manner, the Kolleg will assess the interrelations of legal unity and pluralism afresh and offer a new analytical approach to diverse phenomena of coexistence for discussion.
Scholars from the humanities and social sciences whose research clearly relates both to the general goals of the Käte Hamburger Kolleg and to an annual topic are invited to apply. We are particularly interested in research projects with a pronounced historical perspective. The annual topics of the Kolleg are:
2021/22: Exception and Plurality
2022/23: Modes of Standardisation
2023/24: Causes of Plurality
2024/25: Dynamism and Stability.

YOUR TIME AT THE KOLLEG
During
your time as a fellow you are expected to be an active participant in
the activities and events hosted by the Kolleg. In the course of the
fellowship, you will have the opportunity to present your research
project and discuss it with the other Kolleg fellows. At the end of your
fellowship, your research findings should be published as a journal
article or a comparable publication. In addition, source material
presented by the fellows in joint reading sessions shall be included
with brief explanations in a multilingual source reader. Furthermore,
fellows are invited to contribute to the “Münster Glossary on Legal
Unity and Pluralism”, which is an open-access publication that brings
together short articles from different disciplinary and epochal
perspectives. It aims to facilitate interdisciplinary research on legal
unity and pluralism by providing a brief introduction into different
approaches of the disciplines involved.
In Münster, we offer you an inspiring research atmosphere in an interdisciplinary and international setting with many opportunities for collaboration and intellectual exchange with scholars at the Kolleg. You are also encouraged to contribute to the events programme of the Kolleg by proposing an academic workshop that can be organised in cooperation with our team either during or after your fellowship. However, the central aim of the fellowship is to give you sufficient time to focus on your research topic.
STIPEND
Fellowships are awarded in the form of a
stipend. For the duration of the fellowship, the fellowship holder may
not receive any other grants or stipends from public funds. It is also
not possible to carry out self-employed or employed work parallel to the
fellowship. Fellows are expected to routinely conduct their work from
Münster during their fellowship and to participate in the programme and
the social life of the Kolleg. Please note that it is not possible, for
example, to conduct extensive archival research at other locations.
The Kolleg gladly supports fellows in finding accommodation, but cannot provide accommodation. A personal workplace will be provided.
German and English are the working languages at the Kolleg.
