The Legal Document in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period: Visuality, Materiality, and Performance

The aim of this 2-day interdisciplinary conference is to highlight and explore the visuality, material properties, and performative aspects of legal documents and their role in legal communication across regional and cultural borders (including the pre- and early modern worlds of Africa, Asia, and the Ancient Americas) and within a broadly conceived time frame from antiquity to ca. 1500.

At the same time, 2025 is just five years away from 2030 when the future direction of the current blueprint for global social order, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), will need to be decided.

GRACEH 2025 offers a platform to explore the complex interplay between legal systems and the diverse social fabric of Europe across different historical spaces and periods. Europe’s rich cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity has shaped numerous legal traditions, often oscillating between integration and exclusion. The conference seeks to examine the interaction between legal structures and social diversity as well as the role of law in promoting or suppressing diversity from a historical perspective. In this context, diversity can be understood as the variety of identities, social groups and cultural backgrounds. It includes among other aspects, differences in terms of encompassing gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, social class and Disabilities.

The workshop ‘Arguing over Empire: Hugo Grotius, European Expansionism and Slavery’ is part of a series of conferences organized by the Grotiana Foundation preceding the celebration in 2025 of the 400th anniversary of Grotius’ opus magnum On the Law of War and Peace (De iure belli ac pacis) published in 1625. Previous conferences in this series have dealt with, e.g., ‘Grotius’ Contribution to Commercial and Maritime Law’ and ‘Non-consequential theories of strict liability in historical perspective.’ The workshop is co-organized by the Paul Scholten Centre for Jurisprudence of the University of Amsterdam in cooperation with the Amsterdam Law Hub, with Grotiana, and with the ‘Servus-project’ funded by the NWO.

The editors of EJES are issuing calls for papers for issues of the journal to be published in 2025. Potential contributors are reminded that EJES operates a two-stage review process. The first is based on the submission of detailed proposals (up to 1,000 words) and results in invitations to submit full essays from which a final selection is then made. The deadline for essay proposals for this volume is 30 November 2023, with delivery of completed essays in the spring of 2024, and publication in Volume 29 (2025).

Seit 2022 soll in Jurastudium und Referendariat die Vermittlung des Rechts „auch in Auseinandersetzung mit dem nationalsozialistischen Unrecht und dem Unrecht der SED-Diktatur“ erfolgen (§ 5a Abs. 2 Satz 3 Deutsches Richtergesetz [DRiG]). Universitäten und Justizverwaltungen stehen jetzt vor der Frage, wie diese Vorgabe umgesetzt werden soll – und zu welchem Zweck. Kann sie die „Fähigkeit zur kritischen Reflexion des Rechts“ (§ 5a Abs. 3 DRiG) fördern? Können so Jurist:innen gar, wie im Gesetzgebungsverfahren argumentiert wurde, „Mut, Gegenrede und Widerständigkeit“ erlernen, also eine couragierte demokratisch-rechtsstaatliche Haltung?

The Hungarian Optants Question in transnational perspectives. International organizations and legal dispute settlements of economic and minority problems in the interwar period

The end of WW I drastically changed the political map of Central and Eastern Europe and disrupted large imperial economic markets. With new or enlarged independent states appearing, their elites were facing diplomatic challenges, as well as legal, and economic problems, both internationally and domestically. This conference focuses on the Hungarian Optants Question, using it however as a case study for the larger scope of exploring fields of a changing statehood in the interwar period.
