The Dean of the Faculty of Law at Masaryk University announces a recruitment process for the position of Assistant or Assistant Professor at the Department of History of State and Law for September 2026.

The MU Faculty of Law is one of four public law faculties in the Czech Republic. The current Faculty of Law at Masaryk University can be characterised as a modern, dynamic faculty where teaching and scientific research are at the centre of attention. They are an institution where the terms ‘research activity’ and ‘scientific research’ are not merely empty concepts. The Department of History of State and Law is a unit of the Faculty of Law at Masaryk University that carries out educational and scientific research activities in the field of legal history and Roman law. In terms of teaching, it primarily delivers compulsory courses in Modern Czech and Czechoslovak Legal History, General Legal History and Roman Law, as well as compulsory elective courses in these fields. In the field of research, the department focuses primarily on the subject of modern Czech legal history in its entirety, specifically the period of the First Czechoslovak Republic, the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, and the period of socialism and the functioning of law under totalitarian regimes, as well as the history of legal science. The department’s research also includes studies in the field of Roman law and its institutions, including their legacy and influence on subsequent legal developments and contemporary law.
Your duties will include:
- teaching on courses primarily focused on legal history within accredited degree programmes and lifelong learning programmes, including the development of study programmes,
- research activities, including publishing and applied research,
- making a significant contribution to project work and contract research,
- contributing to the organisational and administrative aspects of research and teaching activities.
Requirements:
- a completed Master’s degree from a law faculty, specialising in Law,
- a Ph.D. (for the position of research assistant),
- the ability to teach and publish in Czech,
- a genuine interest in the field of modern legal history,
- information regarding concurrent employment within the meaning of Section 70 of Act No. 111/1998 Coll. on Higher Education Institutions, as amended,
- the ability to teach independently in the field of modern legal history in both Czech and English, ideally with experience of teaching at university level,
- the ability to conduct independent research in the field of modern legal history in Czech and English, demonstrated by relevant academic publications or participation in research projects,
- knowledge of German is an advantage,
- good character.
